My wife testified at a hearing in a battle over custody of an 8 y/o boy. She testified on behalf of our neighbors who have raised the boy from infancy.
The daughter got pregnant at 17 and had the boy when she was 18. She lived at home with her parents for about 6 months after the birth. The daughter then moved out and has not lived with her parents since. She briefly asked for custody when the boy was 2 and after 3 weeks she returned him to our neighbors.
The boy is now 8. The mom married a man who is in his early 40's. He has 6 children from a previous marriage with his oldest being the same age as his new wife. He makes some pretty good money in the debt collection business. I don't think he is in the mob.
The mom worked as a stipper and probably met her new husband in the club. She has since given up stripping and is now a stay at home mom with no interest in working or getting an education. This according to my wife who heard it from the neighbor.
The courts place a great deal of importance on the bio mom's rights. The boy would probably fare better with our neighbors.
