Vienna to Zell am See (385km)
As we left Vienna on Thursday morning, the sky was overcast and gave the impression the weather could go either way. Despite that, we pulled the top off the Targa and put on our fleeces to fend off the morning chill with the hope that things would improve as the day wore on. Good news was that it did.
We were able to quickly work our way out of Vienna and onto the A2 heading south for about 60km before turning off onto the S2 near Neunkohn. Although the S2 still very much a motorway, it was far less heavily traveled than the A2 and presented a bit of variety with nice sweeping curves and the occasional tunnel as we approached the Alps.
We turned off the S2 at St. Michael after about 90km where we picked up route 113 after deciding to take smaller roads the remainder of the way to Zell am See. We made really good time on the 113 despite it being a two lane road until we hit Liezen where construction, chaos and a bit of rain slowed our progress significantly.
Once getting past Liezen, the weather improved after we picked up route 320 for a super drive away from the masses. This lasted for about 70km when we picked up route 163 at Altenmark running in almost ideal conditions all the way to Zell am See arriving just in time to pick up our registration for Porsche Days.
We quickly dumped our gear at the hotel and drove to the evening Meet & Greet reception at the Castle of Kaprun. Karl Steiner, President, Porsche Club Austria kicked off the event whcih was also attended by Dr. Wolfgang Porsche and his wife, as well as about 200-300 attendees from all over Europe and even a handfull of Americans.
It was a great day all around but Friday's agenda promises to be even better.
