The father and son explained to the judge that they were lost and weak from lack of food. A ranger found the two as they were eating the bird, which they had roasted over a fire.

Considering the circumstances, the judge released the two hikers. As they began to walk out of court, the judge stopped them and asked, "Just out of curiosity, what does a California condor taste like?"

The young son quickly replied, "It tasted like a spotted owl!" The father chuckled, patted his son on the head and said, "Actually, your honor, it tasted just like a California brown pelican."
