The middle is an ebony ramp. It is removable but comes that way standard. It is designed to force you into a lighter touch as you can't really dig in underneath the strings. First bass I've had with one and it is interesting - I've adapted quickly.
This is also 33" scale and 17.5mm bridge space with "small" frets. So it is a very quick playing instrument. It does have straplocks (Dunlops) - they are recessed in the body. That's how Fodera does all their instruments.
