I found one book in particular to be helpful when looking for my 911 - Peter Zimmerman's "Used 911 Story". It covers a lot of the pros and cons of different models and things to watch for.
Definitely get a pre-purchase inspection by a good mechanic before buying the car. But before doing that, do some reading on trouble spots you can check on your own, without paying someone else first.
