Misconception. If you look at patterns within typical home defense distances, you need to be on the money. That being said, 18.5" 870, 1200, or 500, with a laser or ghost ring, shortened stock, and light home defense loads should work just fine.
As for Mossberg being junk, they're carried in vast number of police cruisers all over the world.
