The people breaking into houses to steal do not know this. They are not smart enough, but do know what a shotgun will do...
You do not need all the laser crap on a shotgun, you need to rack a shell into the puppy and that sound alone usually produces an immediate response from the crook, that of running out of the house and thats whats needed in the first place. If they do not do this, then "shoot in that general direction" and guarantee that 99% of them will flee the scene...
