Lockheed’s New STOL Airlifter Design

The four-engine plane (though I only see two in these pictures), called the Speed Agile Concept Demonstrator, is Lockheed’s part of an Air Force Research Lab effort to develop designs for a STOL tactical transport jet capable of operating from short and unprepared landing strips around the world. Boeing is apparently also in on the effort.

A 23 percent-scale turbofan-powered model of Lockheed Martin’s Speed Agile powered-lift STOL airlifter concept for AFRL was tested in the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex at NASA Ames Research Center in California. This consolidation effort brings together experts in scramjets engines, alternative fuels, unmanned vehicles, hypersonic vehicles, collision avoidance, and aircraft energy optimization.

I think under-wing air intakes will be disastrous for the STOL Airlifter. The above wing diagrams are much better to prevent debris on take-off from entering the inlets.
