I missed this part of your OP.
Unless you have compelling reasons to do so, I would not recommend bringing it up with your family, given everything you've told us here.
They would probably freak out... drama city... and you don't need or want that.
And if your son ever found out that you had discussed it with them, that would probably mess things up further.
If they freaked WAY out and contacted him directly, that would be even worse.
Forget I used the word "freak" here... I didn't mean it.
