Herons are magnificent creatures, and rare these days.
If you've ever seen a Great Blue Heron up-close, you'll understand what I'm talking about.
I once took a three day canoe trip down the Huron River, and for many hours herded one of them downstream. Six foot wing span with a a flap-flap-squak-croak. He finally figured it out and circled back around.

In terms of money, I probably spend $20-30/mo on the bottomless cats and dogs. Also bird food. Critters worthwhile.
A few bucks for goldfish would be nothing to be able to view one of those in the yard.
(To note: Birds must be fed consistently, or the feeding tapered off slowly. They spend a lot of energy on their rounds.)
