I think one of the problems is that the car is built so well. 914's and 911's from the pre-galvanization era all rusted to a holy hulk faster than you could say "I paid off my car loan!" This rusting meant that the cars achieved scarcity fast. 928's have great rust protection and hold up well enough.. that alot of ratty examples are out there.. ratty enough to keep but not crush.. that the market is saturated with examples of subpar quality.
I looked at mercedes sl450 examples of 79 descent. Same story there. High prices for models with single and double digit miles on them but overall comparable to 928 pricing. It's that late 70's euro GT that isn't quntessential enough...
As long as non-porsche buyers are leasing the Panamera and then abandon it for a Lexus once the lease is up.. I don't see the front engine Panamera gaining a rabid following like the 911. Thus I'm not holding my breath for the 928 to be a "collectible" anytime soon. It's sad IMHO that any 911 of given year and condition to my 928 is at least twice the value, when the 928 is such a better car.
