At this time the Sports Car Club of America states that the real collectibles right now are 1973 and earlier models of a given marquee because of the sweeping DOT changes to bumpers etc..

Mid 80s 911s aren't going for that much these days maybe $12-$22K even at high end auctions. Turbos with low miles may hit in the $40s

Steve McQueen's 911S as seen in Lemans auctioned for 1.4 million dollars about 6 months ago. Pre '73 911s go for 40 - 70K (not just Ss, Ts and Es) and up all the time at auction. Again because of the cost of restoration otherwise they would not change hands.

Decent 914s auction in the $15000 range at auction and some early 928s do as well. There are just a lot of rats out there as you said.
