Timing Belts

Can timing and balance belts go bad? In the garage I realized I had found one of the zip-lock bags that came with my first 944, and inside was a Porsche/Audi "Boutique Bag", the wiring for an early 944 music fade controller, a sunroof hinge or something like that, and two packages including a still sealed timing belt and balance belt. They are both in the original packaging, Contitech, with tags, Made in Germany etc. Would they be okay to use? I don't know how old they are, but I'm pretty sure it couldn't be more than a couple years max. They look clean and new.
