Backup is not needed, and resyncing is not necessary.
I upgraded my iPhone4 from iOS 5.1 to iOS 6 without needing to backup everything, and without having to recsync anything -- all my music, notes, settings remained the same. Don't know why people are saying this about the upgrade...
One improvement I saw: the moved the bluetooth switch higher up in the Settings App: it is on the first 'page' and you don't have to drill down to the "General" section. Helpful for those who turn off bt when not in use to save battery life. (I can get 2 days out of a single battery charge!
