You really can't say that about an early 911. Nice try, though.

No desire to get into a pissing contest with you Jeff, but you did not answer the question of whether you believe the modern technology and safety features of a 991 do not detract from the driving experience vs. an air cooled oldie 911.
You also appear to be under the impression that a fixed gear bicycle with brakes is less controllable than a bicycle with a freewheel. If you know how to use brakes, you can stop a fixed gear bike as quickly and safely as any freewheel equipped bike. If you don't know how to operate brakes, you probably should not be riding any bicycle. Plenty of idiots on regular bikes get injured or killed despite "modern" conveniences like freewheel. We are not talking about track bikes here with no brakes. I agree anybody who goes out on the street on a bike without brakes, fixed gear or freewheel, is selfish, irresponsible and unsafe. Morons.
The simple fact is that fixed gear cycling is unique, fun and safe if the bike is properly equipped and a bike with a freewheel absolutely will not deliver the same riding experience, just like a 991 will never deliver the air cooled 911 driving experience.
I think another analogy to consider is telemark skiers vs. regular downhill. What do we think of the "free the heel, free the mind" folks? A bunch of self-centered attention whores clinging to dangerous old tech?
