I read it was a little more complicated. The guy bought a car for $34 then traded it the next day for a loaded version of the same car at near $40K . The accounting dept didn,t get the extra when he left with the car (easy to do if you scan the paperwork and you are still buying a 2012 same car (who checks vin numbers on every invoice) and someone started to call him about it.
The buyer was apparently away and returned to find a pile of messages from the dealer asking him to call.
Here,s where the dealer went off the tracks. They assumed he was ignoring their calls. They then called the police and reported the car stolen. I agree with the comment earlier about abuse of process. If the police arrived at my house I have the title to my cars. If the dealer didn,t get paid in full. They can prove it in a small claims case and perhaps send a registered demand letter etc.
I just bought a new truck 6 weeks ago I initially was charged $10 to transfer my old plates to it. Before it arrived I called and left a message to put new plates on it (A $65 difference) . They forgot to collect the $65 when I picked it up. I hope they don,t call the police (or perhaps I do for 2.2 mil.
