When I tried to get my 82 running I had similar issues.
The fuel tank on mine was blocked solid and the lines from the tank to the pump and fuel filter were also gummed up. The fuel pump appeared to have swallowed some of the gummed fuel so wasn't spinning.
I had no option but to replace the tank, pump and lines.
My fuel pump would make a single clonk and that was it, does yours make any noise at all?
