When I see cars like this (and there are a few) I calculate parts value and make an offer based on that. $4500 is about tops, if everything is working well and there are no huge holes in the floor pan.
You never know, there may come a day when early 912s sell in the $30K range in 'driver' condition. We seem to be headed that way. If so, the bare chassis could be worth a large part of the seller's asking price.
