This is fact. Experience has taught me that passport control/customs & immigration etc is a humorless zone with zero tolerance for anything that they don't like. While I might hate to deal with them as a traveler, they are the gates to the border & it is their job to be suspicious. A little less attitude would be nice however . . .
I have had 3 spot checks with my Canpass (iris scan Immigration bypass) in the last 3 months. You have to go to THE ROOM for a random docs & luggage check. The last time he thanked me for packing light.
It's all a part of travel, so just take a good book.
