Looking at it another way, with a car to go in, the '71S engine could be very valuable. It's unlikely to reunite with its original chassis (that could be a financial home run, with 2.2 S valuations pushing 5 figures), but a close match would be a good value boost for the owner of a '71S without engine.
There's a place where you can publish the engine number and potentially find the owner of the chassis the engine came from (rare, but it does happen).
