I ask because it was my understanding that real wood floors require a sub-floor over concrete. That makes the whole thing about 1.5" deep. To do this, I would have to step up onto the wood from my adjacent tile and would throw off the step height out of my front room. Otherwise, I'd be all over a wood floor in my front room.

Bellawood Engineered hardwood about 3/8" thick total. Floor was leveled with self leveling concrete. Heavy duty vapor barrier installed, then urethane glue with additional vapor barrier. Yep, right over the concrete.
The 3/8" matches well with the thickness of the tile.
