For a knife sheath you want some tough leather. Not something soft like what would be used for a jacket. Closer to raw-hide instead of goat skin. You want it to hold form and not bend/cut easy. Imagine pushing your knife into the sheath and the sheath is bent/curled and the knife punctures right through. I've seen it happen
