Maybe you can get some scrap leather from a saddle shop. I use thick saddle leather for sheathes and pistol holsters. The sheath is 1 layer on each side of the blade and 1 layer in the center cutout where the blade goes. Near the thick section of the blade near the handle there is actually a 4th layer to build up the thickness so as to not squeeze the blade tight. There are brass rivets at the 3 high stress areas and then the whole thing is double hand sticked through and through with waxed nylon thread.
