I am certainly no sailor, but heard an interview with an experienced hand who had served aboard this ship.
you don't leave ships tied up to docks when there are storm surges; its a recipe for destruction as the ship slams into the dock. You put out to sea, and on the face of it, looks like the captain misjudged how far he could out pace the storm.
And more importantly; once you lose propulsion , as the Bounty had, then you can't face the waves properly. So it took on water and that was it.
Rest in peace for the crew that was lost
