If he wants to go elsewhere in LA, then being in Hollywood can be a pita. If someone wants to stay there, take the Metro to downtown, then go drinking, it is fine. If they want to explore other areas it isn't ideal imho. As for Chinatown, not sure you're going to the same place. It has very little "China" left and is mostly struggling art galleries. All of the Chinese culture is out in the SG Valley.
Oh, and Old Pasadena is still fairly happening
