I have a Sig P250 subcompact 9mm and a Springfield 1911 .45, so I'll focus on the longer stuff for now.

Benelli, Remmington, Mossberg, etc... buy the one that feels the best to you. The 870 advantage is that there are so many outfitting options available and it's a low cost - high quality option to begin with. My 870 sports a 18.5" barrel with a 6+1 tube when at home. I purchased a used 28" rib barrel with choke for $60 and the gun works great for trap shooting. After more than 1.5K rounds of cheap Federal trap loads (7.5 shot) I started getting some failure to eject (FTE) which was cleared right up with a quick polish of the bore with some 00 steel wool. For HD use load up with 00 buck and call it a day. Slugs are tons of fun to shoot and are surprisingly accurate to 100 yards out of a smooth bore barrel.
This guy
AIP Tactical knows a ton about the 870 platform and his site is worth reading. He also posts alot over on
Calguns (member aippi). Our resident expert (OddJobUno) will steer you to VanComp who has a huge Military/LEO following. It all gets spendy quickly so you need to decide on what you need and how much you want to spend.
Personally I would keep the SG purchase under $500 and spring for a center fire carbine (AR, AK, Mini14/30, etc...) to round out the day.
