My wife and I looked at moving up there to Montpelier a few years ago. We went up for a week in May to check things out. Things I discovered:
1. What Pete says: not much to do in the winter. You are from Mass, so know what the cold is like.
2. Very, very hard to find a house around Montpelier. State and local ordinances regarding lot sizes really discourage new housing. And what does come up for sale, goes very quickly. Prices are high (at least to me) for what you get. If you find a house you like, jump on it.
3. May be hard for the spouse to find a job in her chosen field right away.
