Quote: "I still remember watching that Jim Nicholl crash"

Indeed. All forms of auto racing carry with them the chance of injury or death. The saddest sometimes being, not the actual participant but, the onlooker on the sidelines.
In 1971 we were at Lions Dragway, a late afternoon - carrying over into night time racing. Lions had a elevated walkway that went over the return road/pit area. I believe it was a funny-car owner (who's name I have forgotten) who had a truck with a ramp/incline bed that he hauled his car on. As he pulled his race car back from the end of the track with a sling, two very young children, ( possibly his family members or a team-members kids?) sat atop the cab of that truck, facing backward, watching the race car. The truck passed under the walkway - they never saw it coming. I cannot imagine the horror of the person in the towed race-car witnessing that.
We heard the call for the ambulance and then later walked over. The sight of two small tennis shoes and blood running down that inclined steel bed still haunts me.
