I think Craig and Dalton both play(ed) the role to this type, and Dalton at the time said Bond was less a spy and more a government-sanctioned hit man; the difference is that in the films Craig doesn't seem conflicted about it. It sounds like Bond in the books has to kill people, while Bond in the film gets to kill people.
