The area I live in probably would fit the bill. There is fishing (mostly salmon), whale watching, hiking, the city of Victoria. For a week with young kids, that like doing outdoors stuff, (especially from the heart land) there should be plenty of interesting stuff to do beach hiking and tidal pool exploring etc....I hear you about popular summer vacation spots, crowds and line-ups are not for me.
