They are a real part of RF design. Do a pretty good job of blocking RF from getting onto your DC, it's important to choose the correct inductor and core type for your application. Chokes have a small bandwith and an inductors reactance is frequency dependent.
A RF choke is usually associated with an active device or circuitry (eg an amplifier).
Chokes are common in nearly everything not just in RF equipment, nor are there only RF chokes (AF chokes, common mode chokes).
