I have a hard time getting the experience I'm looking for at beautiful nature places when jammed in shoulder to shoulder.

Aigel, I highly recommend staying at least one night at the El Tovar. It's the only hotel right there on the rim.....the G canyon is a pitching wedge away. Get up early and you'll have the canyon to yourself for a few hours before the crowds.....cool!
