Rubber is useless, it just bounces and will hit the fender or the face... without transferring much energy to the object you are hitting.
Use a plastic mallet that is filled with steel pellets.

If the spacer is a "bolt on" spacer: After you remove the wheel have someone press the brake pedal to lock the wheel.
