If the fob is left inside to communicate with the vehicle, I imagine a typical remote starting relay could be installed to bypass pressing the start button (if so equipped), but leaving the fob inside would also disable theft protection.

Yea, you use a spare key to over-ride that. I have zero concerns about theft.
