The earlier engines (99-01) were more susceptible to failures. However, the motor could break with low mileage, or high mileage. If it is high mileage, the cost of a rebuilt motor is more than the car is worth. A friends shop has a 99 cab that looks good, but the motor is bad. It it were low mileage it would be a toss up. With 200k, you have to ask yourself, why dump that kind of money in a car? If you want a 996, get an 02+ model, but there are still failures. Even the early 997s had some failures.
