Good advice.
If you have a second Mac you can chain them together using a FireWire cable, boot the bad one while holding the T key. Boots it into Firwire Target Disc Mode.
It will pop up on the good Mac as additional drive so you can easily copy/back up your data and even wipe it before sending it out.
