This is an amazing work. I read it many years ago, and it is high on my list of things to re-read.
It is six or eight volumes of the history of England from the earliest times. What makes it so remarkable is it's immediacy, accuracy and readability. Churchill only worked on it in the morning in his bathrobe, and dictated the entire thing to his secretary, over a period of several years. Even more amazing he did so while drinking large amounts of champagne and brandy each morning.
Perhaps most amazing of all is that his biographers tell us the manuscript he dictated required only minor changes before printing. Few things speak more for the prodigious genius of this man, who could dictate the whole immensely complex history of the English people off the top of his head! A stunning achievement from a true giant among men.
