I have been lucky on the job front.
I got my first job sitting in math class as a junior in high school. I was taking all the pictures for the school yearbook and printing them in my home darkroom. The only photos I could not take were the things going on while I was actually in class. The professional photographer that shot them hired me to consolidate his competition. He whispered in my ear "if you want a job come see me after school". I started working for him after school and on Saturday until I graduated and then went full time.
After 6 years I asked for $12,000 per year and he would not pay that. I gave him two weeks notice and started trying to figure out what to do for a job. On July 1st 1978 I drove 888 miles to Oklahoma City to look for a job. I grabbed the phone book and made a list of professional photo labs. On Monday the 3rd I went to the first place on my list and got hired. I went looking for an apartment and found one that day and rented it.
On the 4th of July I stuck around and celebrated the holiday with relatives. On the 5th I drove 888 miles back to Montgomery Alabama, loaded all my possessions in small U-haul trailer hooked it to the 914 and drove 888 miles back to OKC.
I was unemployed for 4 working days total.
I was so broke I ate a lot of rice. The reason I picked OKC as a place to look for a job was my grandparents on both sides lived here. I knew I could go hang out over there on Sunday afternoon and hear the question "can you stay for supper Glen" The answer was always YES!
I did not know anyone in town except my grandparents, and my co-workers.
