Stock speakers had foam surrounds, the wiggly edge between the outside of the cone and frame, and for most its had, the foam is just gone. Shop around kits to replace the surround are cheap and its not a difficult job.
Sign of bad surround, high freq ok, no bass.
I have been VERY happy on several cars adding a subwoofer and high passing the mains, all the bass goes to the sub, and none go to the mains so they sound better and play louder.
