I have been VERY happy on several cars adding a subwoofer and high passing the mains, all the bass goes to the sub, and none go to the mains so they sound better and play louder.

Yes, that foam does deteriorate with age. Better to replace the speakers then have the old ones redone, as speakers are small. I put in the spare tire sub used in a Toyota and added a sub amp, what a difference! Total cost sub was $ 50 used, amp, new Boss amp $47.
