Shimano freehubs will accept 8 thru 10 spd cassettes but there is a spacing difference between Campy and Shimano such that if you run a Shimano wheel/cassette you'll be able to get it to shift, but the tolerances stack up so there's usually one point where it double shifts or requires a double push-workable, but gets annoying. Wheels Manufacturing used to make spacers that you could use to replace the shimano spacers with-need the appropriate ones for 8 or 9 speed.
I ran Shimano wheels on Campy drivetrains for years (8-9-10 spd), but not sure if I still have the spacers around-if I do, they're you know where

But I'll look.
Did find an 8 spd index cog in my parts pin that will allow you to convert early 9spd brifters back to 8 if needed.
