Hugh, Yes, your observation is correct. The Bosch manual even recommended running the water to get it hot prior to operating it. Ours has been used at least 2 loads every day (Beth loves to cook) and it cleans everything, even things that are burned on and I cannot believe it would get clean. You must use a rinse agent for the dishes to dry properly. Ours has a removable top shelf that lets us wash very large items, like pizza pans, roasters, etc... on the bottom rack. You also have to clean out the filter at the bottom of the interior (very easy to do) regularly...
