I don't think the mechanic was wrong. I mean, how much for an oil change?
If the "wrench" was unethical, he would have suggested something else to repair that cost a lot more than a simple oil change.
FWIW... I owned a Mercedes that as soon as you changed the oil, the oil didn't stay yellow. It got dark as soon as the crankcase heated up.
