Ductless systems absolutely energy efficient. I just wouldn't heat or cool entire home with them. If it's the best option to use one absolutely. I'll be installing one at a friends house this spring. It's the best option for him.
Average 1800 suare foot home 1 furnace/1 air conditioner. Ductless 5-7 cassettes 1-2 condensing units. That's alot of units to maintain or increase your odds of repair bills over 10+ years. I don't find the cassettes to be ascetically pleasing either. A properly designed and sized ducted system will work very well and be energy efficient. Better yet for comfortable heat, radiant.
I can promise you 100 degree air blowing at you, as it's heating your home, with 17 degree outside air temp is not comfortable. I would also think , Michigan's design temp for heat is a lot lower than 17 degrees.
