I wrestled with the option and could never justify it given the time required. I think it works for some folks, but with the kids' activities, my work schedule, my track addiction and other issues that require my time I wouldn't have used a vacation home enough to make it a good purchase.
So we decided to just move out to the country and got the best of both. We don't live too far out, and I can still commute to work. It added maybe 10 minutes to our commute (wife and mine) each way, but the benefits are well worth it. I would have been happy to add another 30 minutes to my commute.
