I find myself cringing when encountering errors in writing and think it's vaguely poor form to point them out. I can't say it's not tempting (and perhaps I have done it) but if the message gets through accurately, fine. If not, it seems best to just ask for clarification. A reasonable exception for giving someone a "pass" might be made for those attempting condescension.
I find most of my writing/spelling errors occur when trying to write while spun-up about an issue. It's tough to be eloquent when verging on cerebral hemorrhage.
