Maybe in liberal arts, business, pre-law, etc. My recent experience with good engineering schools is that your college entrance exam scores and high school grades in "non-basket weaving" courses are 97% of the entrance criteria. They don't care if you were a varsity starter, an Eagle Scout, rebuilt a car engine, etc. Perhaps because once you are in a top-notch engineering program there is little or no time for "varied interests" outside of the program. They tell the freshman to plan on being in class or studying 60 hours a week.
