Remember their safety starts with you and educating them. I had a friend who deliberately left a pistol out once to see what his kids would do. They saw it, left the room, and immediately came and got him. Not how I would handle it but my 8 year old can already recite and understand the rules..

1. Every gun is to be considered loaded.
2. Never point a gun at something you don't want dead/destroyed.
3. If holding a weapon, muzzle in the air or ground. If someone walks in front of path, immediately point it up or down.
4. Finger stays in ready position untill you are ready to fire.
5. If you see a gun without Dad around, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.

We've practiced with a paintball gun. He gets it.

Bottom line is they need to be taught first, and then also deal with your Pops.
