I treat every gun like it's loaded until I have checked it. While it's on my bench I don't worry. Once it is out of my hands I check it again like it's new. I even clear guns on display before I give them to a customer, sometimes just to instill that procedure on them.
Black powder long guns are always treated as loaded until it has been determined they are not. About 30% that are trade ins are loaded, some twice.
Drop the mag,
Rack the slide,
Check the chamber,
Check the well.
