the donut gasket that i replaced on my wife's subie a couple of weeks back, exactly like this one 1998 Subaru Forester Exhaust Gasket - Exhaust - Bosal 98 Forester Exhaust Gasket - 345-05018543 - ********* has a small exhaust leak. i thought that it would seal itself, being that the joint is spring loaded and the gasket seemed fairly compressible.

what do i need to do to get the thing sealed properly? another new gasket?

Make sure you've removed all of the old gasket. It has a tendency to stick to the pipe. Had the same problem with my tacoma and on the second try i found piece of the old gasket still stuck to the front pipe where I couldn't see it.
